New Work - Untitled

artistry, survival and the shadows of war

Florence, 1967: Aurora’s wartime lie kept her alive.

    Now, it might destroy her.

Aurora, a charismatic flamenco dancer, spent 22 years living a lie—to survive the war and to protect her son. Now, she’s ready to reveal her secrets. Her story intertwines with those of two other aspiring artists, through harrowing captures, daring escapes and romantic entanglements. As they face calamity, their good intentions spiral into tragedy.

A performance by Aurora leads to a devastating event after the Nazis occupy her hometown of Trieste. She survives by perfecting her most perilous performance as the devoted wife of the Fascist who saved her. Ruth, a Jewish writer, chases danger. After a harrowing escape from Berlin to Rome following Kristallnacht, her involvement in writing an anti-Mussolini leaflet leads to a shocking consequence. Paul, a Black jazz musician fighting to be heard, grows up in his family's Parisian jazz club. After a Nazi attack, he follows two women into the French Resistance.

Untitled channels my 50-year career as a dance professional into its pulse—from the rhythm of flamenco echoing in Trieste’s Jewish Quarter to the defiant jazz of Paris’ underground clubs.

I hope the blend of moral complexity, wartime resilience and the transformative power of art will resonate with you.

I began writing this novel—my first—at the beginning of the COVID lockdown. I was living on my own and missing the joy of being in a studio teaching high-spirited, talented, university dance students.

So perhaps it was inevitable that I focused on three young artists in my storytelling.

When my fingers began tapping computer keys, words about Aurora, Ruth and Paul in 1930's and '40's Europe filled the pages.

They each created their own story. I followed them and tried to keep up.
